Description
AWW6 – Painting with Watercolour – Wednesdays @ 6:30pm
Beginners and intermediate.
Wednesdays 6:30pm -8:30 pm, 8 weeks x 2 hrsÂ
Teacher: Gus Carrozza
Learn the basics or extend skills in painting with watercolour.
See below for materials list.
For new students we’ll be covering the basics – different washes, brushwork and colour mixing plus any other subjects or issues arising from questions (this will be ongoing throughout the term).
During the term, we’ll also cover some basic colour theory (e.g. Colour wheel), as well as simple principles of composition.
Exercises will be designed to build skills and give students confidence in the watercolour medium.
Continuing students will be guided and encouraged to further develop their skills and ultimately develop their own individual style.
Demos will be given as required for new techniques and concepts.
Students are encouraged to bring in photos or objects of interest for their painting subjects, however, I’ll also be bringing in reference material and objects for this purpose.
The overall goal of the class is to give students the tools and skills necessary to feel confident using the beautiful medium of watercolour and enjoy the learning experience.
Materials List
Paper
- Watercolour paper (300gsm)
- 100% Cotton (please, no wood pulp papers), medium texture.
- Suggested brands: Arches, Saunders Waterford, Fabriano
- 3 or4 full sheets, OR a watercolour pad (A3)
- Cheaper non-cotton paper may seem like a good option when starting out, but it doesn’t give the same results as a cotton paper and will often lead to poor results and frustration.
Paints
- Tubes are preferable to pans for the paints below.
- Winsor & Newton student grade (Cotman) watercolours OR
- Winsor & Newton / Art Spectrum artist quality watercolours. These paints produce richer, stronger colours and go further than the student quality ones.
- A palette will also be needed for tube paints. One with large missing areas is recommended.
- If using pan paints, a separate palette is advisable because the mixing areas on pan palettes is usually quite small.
Essential colours
- Cadmium Yellow
- Lemon Yellow
- Cadmium Red
- Alizarin Crimson or Permanent Rose
- Ultramarine Blue
- Cobalt Blue
- Raw Sienna
- Burnt Sienna
Also useful
- Viridian or Hookers Green
- Burnt Umber
Brushes
- Size 3, 6 and 10 round sable (if you can afford them) or synthetic sable
- Large “mop” brush or ¾ inch (20mm) flat synthetic brush
- Rigger No 1 or 2
Also required
- Pencil 2B
- Kneadable eraser
- Masking tape
- Paper towel (for removing excess water from the brush and lifting paint from the paper)
- Board for painting on a slight sloped angle – A3 or larger. Foam core is a good lightweight option
