Course Overview
Goal: Participants will create a completed abstract landscape painting on canvas, learning key techniques such as colour mixing, texture, layering, and composition. 8-Week Schedule: Week 1 — Materials & Introduction to Acrylics. Overview of materials and choosing a landscape reference photo. Activity: playing with materials and choosing two landscape photos as reference. Week 2 — Colour Theory & Mixing. Primary/secondary colours, warm vs. cool, and a harmonious landscape palette. Activity: creating your landscape colour chart and mixing muted tones. Week 3 — Composition & Sketching. Simplifying your landscape into shapes; contrast, design and composition. Activity: three small sketches and painting the first layer. Week 4 — Play and Expression. Freedom in first layers. Activity: using tools to apply layers of spontaneous colour. Week 5 — Building Layers & Texture. Introducing texture. Activity: blocking in main shapes/colours with texture. Week 6 — Building Layers Using Intuition. Texture techniques, dry brushing, abstract elements. Activity: adding layers. Week 7 — Refining, Detail & Glazing. Final details (negative painting) and glazing. Activity: reviewing composition, adjusting contrasts. Week 8 — Final Touches & Group Exhibition. Final details and signing your work. Activity: sealing, signing and showcasing.
What You'll Learn
Understand acrylic paint properties and how to work with them. Mix a harmonious colour palette for their landscapes. Apply layering techniques to create depth and texture. Use brushes, palette knives and tools for different marks. Translate a landscape reference photo into an abstracted composition.
Materials Required
Materials fee: $120 for the course — paper & canvas to take home, rest of materials for use during class. Paid directly to the instructor.
